Cash Converters franchise is named Employer of the Year at National Pawnbrokers Association Awards

Capital Cash, the largest Cash Converters franchise in the UK, has been awarded ‘Employer of the Year’ at the National Pawnbrokers Association (NPA) Awards

It is the sixth consecutive year the franchise has won a major accolade at the national event, after it was highly commended for the same award in 2019

The largest franchise of the UK’s most popular second-hand retailer Cash Converters, Capital Cash, has taken home the title of ‘Employer of the Year’ at a national awards ceremony in recognition for its efforts during the pandemic.

The accolade marks the sixth successive year the franchise has been commended by the National Pawnbrokers Association (NPA) and it is the first time any company has achieved consecutive accolades at the awards, which have included the Community Contribution Award, and highly commended Employer of the Year.

This is the second time Capital Cash have taken home Employer of the Year, with judges on this occasion praising the company’s focus on employee engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We made it our absolute priority to keep in regular contact with staff across our 41 stores,” said Carl Murray, Managing Director at Capital Cash. “Both from a re-assurance and wellbeing perspective, ensuring that our staff were kept fully informed was key for us, particularly as we geared up to store re-openings.”

During the pandemic, senior management at Capital Cash launched a Health and Safety committee made up of staff across all levels to give their workforce a voice on key decisions made by the company. They also rolled out new online training programmes to keep staff engaged and up to date, including customer service, pawnbroking and jewellery security.

The firm also teamed up with leading diamond specialist, De Beers and funded 100 free staff places on their Diamond Foundation Course, all of which were filled by Capital Cash staff.

During the last 12 months, the company also applied to take part in the government’s Kickstarter scheme, designed to help 18-24 years into employment. So far, they have employed 21 young people across their stores and have applied for a further 41 licenses.

Carl continued, “There’s no doubt that the last two years have been incredibly challenging for many business owners but taking a look back on how our team rallied together during this time is really humbling. We’re proud that judges at the NPA have recognised our efforts, and to break a record for most consecutive awards is a testament to the professionalism, expertise and excellence our staff have shown throughout this unprecedented and challenging time.”

Capital Cash has been a member of the National Pawnbrokers Association for 30 years and works to promote the benefits of pawnbroking in its local communities.

The association helps large commercial chains and independent pawnbrokers to grow and develop within the industry. It ensures all its members are compliant with new laws, rules and procedures and safeguarding customers and is the authoritative voice of the pawnbroking profession.
